Ephesians 3:16-21

“I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.”

What has struck me as I read Ephesians is the extravagant language used to describe our God, His wonderful kindness, and His mighty power. This passage is no different. It uses words that my small human mind could not put together to say just what I pray for you, as you read this, this Thanksgiving week:

  • That you would have inner STRENGTH, through His Spirit;

  • That you would have FAITH and Christ would live inside you;

  • That you would know just WHO you are, and WHOSE you are;

  • That your faith would hold you SECURE, as an anchor;

  • That you would see his POWER- that He is able to do “immeasurably more” than we even “imagine”:

    • And that you would know that that same POWER is working inside of us;

  • And, last, I can not even paraphrase this, because it is JUST TOO GOOD:

    • that you would “grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge…”

    • Read those descriptors of His love again- how WIDE, LONG, HIGH, DEEP; it SURPASSES KNOWLEDGE!

Extravagant language for His extravagant love, mercy, grace, kindness, and power. That is something for which to give thanks this week.

Heavenly Father,

Thank you for your love and for rooting and establishing us in your love (love that surpasses knowledge). Thank you for the confidence we can have in your great power. Thank you that your power is at work within us also. Thank you also for being our anchor, especially when this life seems so “ever-changing.”
