#TuesdayTruth Luke 17:5-6

Luke 17:5-6

The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!” He replied, “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it will obey you.

As we start a new year, it is quite typical to consider what you would like to accomplish/see in the coming 12 months. I began thinking about this as it relates to my walk with my Heavenly Father.

For me, personally, in this coming year, I long for increased faith. The thing is, I do truly believe in the omnipotence of the one true God. I believe that His word is truth. I believe that He is who He says He is and that I am who He says I am. Despite all that, if I am truly honest with myself (and with you), I see that I struggle with my faith in this BIG, ALL-POWERFUL, WONDERFUL God in the day-to-day of my life (the mundane, as some would call it).

Now, I will tell you quite frankly that it scares me a bit to even say that or put that “out there” (that my longing is for increased faith). Why? Well, I am a practical person, and I know that God’s likely response to a request such as, “God, increase my faith,“ could very reasonably be a process that will make me uncomfortable; it might be difficult or even painful, but all that for the greater good of helping me achieve my ultimate goal- for bigger faith.

Think about this: if you want to get better at something physical, like running or weight-lifting, what do you do? Well, you train, right? You push the limits of your physical capabilities and you do not get stronger or more endurance without pushing yourself a bit harder day in and day out.

I would imagine that increasing my faith will be a similar process. So, with all that trepidation that comes with “do I really want to ask God for this,” I do. I say, just like the apostles said to Jesus so many years ago in the verse shown here, “Increase our Faith!” God, my Father, was the same yesterday, today and forever. Even if my faith is small, He has shown Himself to be faithful again and again, all through eternity. And, hey, the verse for this week tells us, I just need faith the size of a mustard seed! Surely, that is do-able, right?! By His power, it is. It shall be.

Heavenly Father,

Thank you for your faithfulness through all eternity. Thank you for calling me your own, for loving me despite my faults and for not seeing my lack of faith, but for instead seeing your Son when you see me. Thank you that, even though my faith is small now, I know that you can help me grow in my faith as I get to know you better.

We love you Father, Amen.
