The Significance of "MURPH"

“MURPH”

Frequently, CrossFit will create or program a WOD (workout of the day) to honor an individual. “Murph” is just such a hero WOD, which is done by CrossFit gyms around the world every Memorial Day.

The workout is named for Navy Lieutenant Michael Murphy, who was killed in the line of duty on June 28th, 2005. He was 29 years old when he died.

The workout itself is: 1 mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 air squats, and 1 mile run. It was actually created by Murphy himself and he called the workout “Body Armor” because of the 20 pound vest he wore during the workout.

So, this Memorial Day, we at CrossFit 15:10 plan to join with CrossFit gyms around the world to again program and participate in “Murph.” As with any hero WOD, we encourage everyone who participates in any capacity (whether that be RX, Scaled, Partitioned, Modified, Adapted, etc) to remember the “why” of the WOD. It is meant to remember and honor Navy Lieutenant Michael Murphy, in addition to every American soldier who has given his or her life for the freedoms that we enjoy in the USA.

So, with that said, let’s get after the training, prep for “Murph,” and be prepared to give it our all.
